Panorama

Prenatal genetic testing – Advanced technology and enhanced accuracy

What is Panorama?

Panorama is a non-invasive DNA screening test that can tell you important information about your pregnancy, as early as nine weeks of gestation. With Panorama, you can find out about the likelihood of your baby having a chromosomal condition, such as Down syndrome, with a simple blood test. If you so choose, you may also find out the gender of your baby.

Why choose Panorama?

  • Panorama can be performed as early as 9 weeks into pregnancy.
  • Panorama is performed with a simple blood draw from the mother’s arm, posing no risk to the baby compared to amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS).
  • Panorama offers complimentary pre- and post-test information sessions with registered genetic counselors and/or fetal medicine consultants
  • More than 2 million women in more than 80 countries have chosen Panorama.

What Panorama Screens For

Panorama is a non-invasive prenatal screening test that distinguishes between fetal and maternal cell-free DNA thanks to Natera´s advanced DNA analysis and bioinformatics technology. Panorama screens for some of the most common genetic conditions and the baby’s gender (optional).

Some conditions, such as Down syndrome, are caused by extra copies of a specific chromosome. Others, such as microdeletions, occur when a chromosome is missing a smaller piece of genetic information. Unlike Down syndrome, where the age of the mother affects the risk, microdeletions have the same risk whatever the age of the mother.

Using advanced bioinformatics techniques, Panorama screens for a broad panel of chromosomal conditions, including:

Whole Chromosome conditions:

  • Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)
  • Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome)
  • Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)
  • Triploidy

Gender of the Baby (optional)

Sex Chromosome conditions:

  • Monosomy X (Turner syndrome)
  • Other sex chromosome conditions: these are reported if suspected
    • Klinefelter syndrome
    • Triple X syndrome

Microdeletions:

  • 22q11.2 deletion syndrome
    More information (PDF)
  • 1p36 deletion syndrome
  • Prader-Willi syndrome
  • Angelman syndrome
  • Cri-du-chat syndrome

Twin Pregnancies

Identical and fraternal twins:

  • Zygosity (shows whether twins are identical or fraternal)
  • Individual fetal fraction for dizygotic (non-identical) twins
  • Trisomy 21, Trisomy 18, Trisomy 13
  • Gender of each twin (optional)

Twin Pregnancies

If our screening finds that your twins are identical, Panorama can additionally screen for:

  • Monosomy X (Turner syndrome)
  • Other sex chromosome conditions will be reported if suspected.
  • 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (optional)

Egg Donor or Surrogate Pregnancies

  • Trisomy 21
  • Trisomy 18
  • Trisomy 13
  • Gender (optional)

Is Panorama right for me?

According to the International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis (ISPD), non-invasive prenatal testing, including Panorama, is appropriate as a primary screening test for pregnant women of all ages. Down syndrome and certain other chromosomal conditions occur more frequently in babies born to mothers over 35 years old. Other conditions for which Panorama screens - such as microdeletions syndromes - occur with the same frequency in babies, regardless of the mother's age.

There are pregnancies where Panorama cannot be used at present. These include

  • Triplets or higher order multiple gestations
  • Donor egg or surrogate pregnancies with twins
  • Pregnant women who are bone marrow transplant recipients
  • Pregnancies where there is known to have been a 'vanished' twin

Your healthcare professional can advise you as to whether Panorama is suitable in your pregnancy.
